Third countries align with EU restrictive measures on Iran and Sudan

The EU announced that certain third countries aligned with EU Council decisions introducing or amending restrictive measures concerning Iran’s military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, support for armed groups and entities in the Middle East and Red Sea region, and actions undermining freedom of navigation. A separate statement concerned measures related to activities undermining Sudan’s stability and political transition.

What is happening

On 14 August 2026, the EU High Representative stated that certain third countries had aligned with Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1837 of 24 July 2026, amending measures concerning Iran. On 29 July 2026, the High Representative stated that certain third countries had aligned with Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1705 of 13 July 2026, amending measures concerning Sudan.

Why is it on the Radar?

The statements indicate that certain third countries are aligning with EU restrictive measures in two areas: Iran-related activities affecting Russia’s war against Ukraine, armed groups and entities in the Middle East and Red Sea region, and freedom of navigation; and activities undermining Sudan’s stability and political transition.
